Single A

The following is a list of compulsory tricks that all entrants into the Single A division must complete to advance to the Freestyle section of the division. The 10 highest scoring competitors will advance to the freestyle round.

Read trick descriptions carefully. All tricks are to be performed as described in the text and accompanying video (if available). Significant loss of control of the yo-yo will not be allowed. This round allows one attempt of each trick for five points, a second attempt (if necessary) for three points, if the trick is not made on the second attempt then it is considered a miss - you will score 0 points and will attempt the next trick. Your compulsory score is the total of the points scored on the ten tricks. Top scoring players advance to the final freestyle.

Please note: Bind returns are allowed for all tricks but not required. A failed bind return will be considered a miss.

1. Split the Atom (3 somersaults):
Throw a split-bottom mount and perform a pass under the yo-yo with your Freehand index finger, then push forward into the double string segments with your Freehand index finger followed by a pass under the yo-yo with your Throwhand index finger. Now push back on the string segments and perform 3 or more somersaults. Perform any dismount and return the yo-yo to your hand by the method of your choice.

2. Suicide Catch ( 2 Reps)
Trapeze mount, 2 Suicide catches back into Trapeze hold. All Suicide throws must be from a Trapeze hold over the throwhand and must be caught on the index finger only of the freehand. To be performed exactly as seen in video. Please note - the video shows 3 reps, you are only required to complete 2.

4. Kwijibo
Trapeze mount, then perform an upward Pop into a wrist-crossed "One and a Half" mount hold (with throwhand over freehand), then roll throwhand over and under freehand into a wrist-crossed "One and a Half" mount hold (with freehand over throwhand), then Pop to a Double or Nothing hold, then Pop to a Trapeze hold and return the yo-yo to the hand. (Note that yo-yo must be popped upward on all three Hops, not to the side, and on the first Pop the throwhand must be clearly crossed over the freehand so that the yo-yo is caught in the middle of a "close to" horizontal wrist-crossed One and a Half" mount hold.) Note that all pops must go above the player's head.

5. Hop in the bucket (5 Reps)
Start with a Drop in the Bucket mount and perform five Hops in the bucket. During each Hop the yo-yo must rise above the bucket by at least one yo-yo diameter. After the fifth Hop in the Bucket, toss the yo-yo onto the string furthest from the body. Then drop string off thumb of freehand and index finger of throwhand into a Trapeze hold and return the yoyo to your hand.

6. Throwhand Grind
Trapeze mount, reverse pinwheel off trapeze to a grind on top of the Throwhand, slide back onto a Trapeze from the grind. Perform 1 somersault letting the momentum of the somersault toss the yo-yo onto the top of the Throwhand for a second grind, slide yo-yo off the top of the Throwhand back into a Trapeze hold. Return yo-yo to your hand using the method of your choice. (Ferris wheel return example shown in video - but binds are allowed)

7. Coldfusion
Start with a Trapeze, insert your yohand index finger into the loop and roll into a Double or Nothing. Bring your Throwhand under the yo-yo, landing it on the outermost upper string, and then push your Throwhand index finger into the double strings. Bring your Freehand under the yo-yo, landing it on the outermost upper string, and pull your Freehand index finger out leaving you in a 1.5-mount. Sling the yo-yo over towards your Freehand, and then back over your Throwhand, letting the yo-yo wrap around your index finger one more time. Unravel the wraps and land the yoyo back into a trapeze hold. Perform any dismount and return the yo-yo to your hand by the method of your choice. (Please note - the video shows clodfusion WITHOUT a trapeze entry. For the above trick you MUST start in a trapeze and ROLL into a double or nothing as described - the rest of the video is accurate)

8. Flying Trapeze Green Triangle (1 rep)
Trapeze mount. Dismount from trapeze while holding string with Freehand. Pinch string with Freehand and pull up on the yo-yo with and slack string up and over the string segment held between the Throwhand and Freehand (note that the slack segment should go over string from in front of string to between the string and your body.) Catch the yo-yo on the slack string in a Green Triangle (GT). Dismount from GT, tossing yo-yo away from the body, while holding string with Freehand. Perform 2 reps. Return the yo-yo to your hand by the method of your choice. (Please note the video shows 4 reps, however only 1 rep is required)

9. Hook
Also known as Hidemasa Hook. Throw a breakaway to a sleeper in front you. Extend the index finger from the free hand as you would for a Trapeze. With the yo-yo sleeping in front of you, pop the yo-yo up just below the free hand index finger. While the yo-yo is 'floating', swing the slack string under the yo-yo and the free hand index finger so that a U-shaped loop forms from under the free hand index finger. Allow the U-shaped loop to hit the underside of the free hand index finger and swing over the top of the finger. The U-shaped loop should the swing the outer string of the loop into the string gap. Roll the yo-yo over the free hand back to a bind in a modified trapeze hold. Unbind the trapeze hold and return the yo-yo to your hand by the method of your choice.

If first attempt is missed, complete 2 or more reps on the second try gets 3 pts.
